I don’t really know much about what I’m doing in the photography world, but I’m doing it.
This year for my birthday, I used some of the money I got as gifts and bought myself a nice camera. I didn’t just get the camera—I also got a good lens to go with it.
The camera I bought is a Canon EOS R50. It’s a mirrorless camera. I chose mirrorless over a DSLR because it’s a little smaller and easier to carry around, even if the size difference isn’t huge.
The camera came with a kit lens. It’s an 18mm to 45mm lens. Since the camera has a crop sensor, you need to multiply those numbers by 1.6. That means the lens is really more like a 28.8mm to 72mm. This lens works well for a bunch of things, like landscape photos, portraits, or street photography.
The lens I bought separately is much bigger. It’s a Canon RF 100mm to 400mm lens. On a crop-sensor camera, that turns into 160mm to 640mm. This lens has really good reviews. A lot of people say it’s a great lens for beginners who want to try wildlife photography. It lets you zoom in pretty far without losing much image quality.
So far, it has been a blast. I have gone on several walks with the camera and have snapped some great photos (even in my own backyard). See a few of my favorites, below.
